The Azerbaijani Embraer 190 plane in Kazakhstan was likely shot down by a Russian air defense system. The US saw some initial signs, states the US National Security Council’s coordinator for strategic communications, John Kirby, according to journalist Kellie Meyer on Twitter (X).

“We have seen some early indications that would certainly point to the possibility that this jet was brought down by Russian air defense systems,” Kirby said.

According to him, the US has offered its assistance in investigating the plane crash.

Plane crash in Kazakhstan

On December 25, a passenger plane, an Embraer 190 of Azerbaijan Airlines, crashed in the vicinity of Aktau, Kazakhstan. The flight was en route from Baku to Grozny.

It is known that there were 67 people on board, including the crew. As a result of the crash, 38 people died.

Earlier, it was reported that the cause of the crash was a Russian missile. Media and analysts claim that the plane was downed by Russian air defense near Grozny.

The head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, confirmed that the plane was shot down by Russia’s Pantsir S1 air defense system on Russian territory.

According to Reuters, Baku expects Russia to admit responsibility for downing the Azerbaijani plane.
