Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict

Human Rights Watch has issued a stark warning that Gaza was already facing famine before Israel initiated Operation Gideon’s Chariots II in Gaza City, labeling the humanitarian situation as catastrophic, reports 24brussels.

The organization is calling for an international arms embargo on Israel and the imposition of sanctions on officials implicated in war crimes. Humanitarian agencies have consistently highlighted that the ongoing blockade has severely restricted access to food, medicine, and other critical supplies, pushing Gaza to the brink of total collapse. UN data shows that half of Gaza’s population is now at risk of famine, with the Commission of Inquiry accusing Israel of deliberately weaponizing starvation against civilians.

Despite mounting global calls for the restriction of arms sales and greater accountability for Israeli leaders, a lack of enforcement has emboldened military operations, exacerbating the dire humanitarian crisis. This week, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) officially declared famine in certain areas of Gaza, stating that 514,000 people, approximately one in four residents, are currently affected—a number projected to rise to 641,000 by the end of September.

According to reports from Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 313 individuals, including 119 children, have succumbed to starvation, with an additional 10 deaths—two of whom were children—recorded in the past 24 hours. Aid organizations emphasize that over 6,000 trucks loaded with relief supplies remain halted at Gaza’s borders due to Israeli restrictions. UN officials have warned that a large-scale assault on Gaza City would obliterate any chance of averting mass starvation.

In response to the IPC’s findings, Israel has dismissed the report, exerting pressure on the organization to retract its claims and threatening to withdraw funding if the report is not amended.
